Dr. Bodo Rosenhahn
Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarbrücken
Dr. Gunnar Rätsch
Friedrich Miescher Laboratory of the Max Planck Society, Tübingen
The Olympus Award was granted to Bodo Rosenhahn for his work on the highly realistic and highly accurate 3D reconstruction of human motion from video image sequences. He was able to show that markerless image-based motion tracking of articulated objects with many degrees of freedom is possible with similar accuracy as when using elaborate marker-based systems, especially by combining silhouette-based methods and using learning methods for gaining prior knowledge about movement trajectories.
The Olympus Award was granted to Gunnar Rätsch for his work in machine learning and bioinformatics. He was able to successfully characterize the boosting processes and establish them in various disciplines. In addition, he has been able to successfully bridge the gap between machine learning and computational chemistry and biology, e.g. in the area of splice site prediction.
